It started with a trickle

when I took my first breath.

A drop here, a drop there

as I learned to walk and talk.

The laughter of innocence,

a lost toy, and a clip

to hold my hair.

I dribbled through my

first school day,

confused about leaving

my mother and my home.

I drizzled through my

high school and college years.

A rite of passage as I pondered

my future identity.

I splashed through classes,

tests, dances, a first date,

graduations, avocations

and career.

I thought I would always

be permanently moist

but the years flew by

as I answered life's calls

and followed my dreams

through youth, middle age,

life's paradoxes

and my senior years.

And now I overflow with age,

saturated with many memories,

life experience in the wisdom years,

wondering when my sponge

will dry or what will

wring it out.
