Our story

Four decades in service of one idea

Creations Magazine has spent forty years in service of a single idea: that wellness is whole. Body, mind and spirit belong together, and the people walking that path deserve a publication that meets them with warmth, honesty and real wisdom.

We began as a local print magazine for a Long Island community that was doing this work long before anyone called it wellness: the acupuncturists and the grief counselors, the yoga teachers and the poets, the people quietly holding a room together on a Tuesday night. Those are still our writers. That is still our reader.

What has changed is reach. The magazine still lands in health-food stores, studios and practices across the region, picked up by hand. It now also lives here, where a piece written on Long Island years ago gets read across the country on somebody's hard morning. Both of those matter to us equally.

We are not here to tell you what to believe. We are here to keep you company while you work it out.

The through-line

How we got here

  1. 1985

    The first issue

A regional print magazine for a holistic community that had no publication of its own. Free, then as now.

  2. The nineties

    A directory people kept

Readers started using the resource pages to find their acupuncturist, their therapist, their teacher. The magazine became a map of the community as much as a record of it.

  3. The 2010s

    The archive goes online

Hundreds of articles, essays and poems moved to the web, where they quietly kept finding new readers long after the issue left the shelf.

  4. Today

    Print, digital, and a conversation

Six issues a year, a growing online archive, a reader community, and a podcast that lets you hear the voices behind the pages.

What we stand for

Six things we hold to

Not a mission statement. The actual working rules that decide what runs and what does not.

Wellness is whole

Body, mind and spirit are not separate departments. We refuse to cover one as though the others were not in the room.

Many traditions, no last word

We hold space for many paths without claiming any single one as the answer, and we honor this community's language without flattening it.

Care before claims

We do not publish that anything cures, treats or prevents disease. A reader's safety outweighs a good headline every time.

Local roots, open door

Our core is Long Island and New York City. Our readership reaches across the country, and new voices are welcome at every stage of the path.

The writer's voice survives

We edit for clarity, never to make everyone sound the same. If a piece stops sounding like you, we have failed at our job.

Free, and staying free

No paywall, in print or online. The magazine is supported by advertisers who belong in this community, and readers never pay to read.

Listen

Creations Conversations

Our podcast, hosted by Domenick and Neil, brings the pages to life with interviews and honest dialogue about living consciously in a complicated world. The same voices you read, with the pauses left in.

A two-way magazine

Creations has always been written by its community rather than about it. There are four doors in, and all of them are open.

  • Contribute a piece: articles, essays, poetry and reviews, from first-time writers and long-time practitioners alike.
  • Join the circles: comment on articles and talk with other readers.
  • Advertise with us: how a free magazine stays free, and how readers find you.
  • Sell for Creations: a commission-based advertising sales role, open across NYC and Long Island.
