Learning to Recognize the Difference Between Intuition and Ego

by Cheryl Bradley

Many people believe intuition is a rare gift reserved for psychics or spiritual teachers. In truth, intuition is something every person possesses. It is a natural inner guidance system that quietly helps us navigate life, relationships, and everyday decisions as we move through this human experience.

The challenge is not that intuition is absent; it’s that we often overlook those quiet whispers or explain them away through the voice of ego with thoughts of doubt, fear, or overthinking. When our minds become busy with worry or analysis, it becomes harder to recognize the calm voice of inner guidance.

In my work as a spiritual medium and teacher, I often see how easily people doubt the guidance already present within them — the soul’s inner wisdom is a natural part of the human experience. Over the years, I’ve found that intuition becomes much easier to recognize when we simplify the process. One phrase I often share with students is: “If it’s light, it’s right.” This simple mantra can become a powerful spiritual tool for recognizing authentic intuition and learning to trust the guidance already within you.

Understanding the Difference Between Intuition and Ego

One of the most common questions people ask is, “How do I know if something is intuition or just my mind talking?” The answer often lies in how the message feels.

Intuition usually arrives instantly, without analysis or debate. There are no “ifs,” “ands,” or “buts.” Instead, it appears as a quiet inner knowing that carries a feeling of lightness rather than heaviness. It may surface as a gentle awareness when we are open to receiving it. Intuition does not pressure or create anxiety. Instead, it feels calm and steady, even when guiding us toward something unfamiliar.

Ego, on the other hand, tends to sound very different. Ego isn’t bad, it’s simply part of being human, but it often acts as intuition’s adversary. Ego may show up as overthinking, urgency or worry about making the wrong decision. It can feel loud, repetitive and heavy.

A helpful way to tell the difference is to simply ask yourself:
Does this thought feel light… or heavy?

When something feels peaceful, expansive, or light, intuition may be present. When it feels tight, pressured, or draining, ego or fear may be influencing the response. Learning to notice this difference is the first step in strengthening intuition.

3 Simple Ways to Strengthen Your Intuition

Once we recognize the difference between intuition and ego, the next step is strengthening that inner guidance. Intuition is not something we force, it’s something we allow and become more aware of.

1. Open to Your Psychic Abilities

Your intuition is closely connected to your psychic abilities, often referred to as your clairs. These are the ways your spiritual senses receive information, much like your human senses of seeing, hearing, or feeling. Your clairs are the fuel that creates intuition: that familiar gut feeling that simply arrives.

For some people, intuition arrives as a feeling in the body. Others may hear a thought, see an image or simply know something without explanation. Begin by welcoming your psychic abilities and noticing how intuition naturally arrives for you. The more you sense how it comes in, the more trust you will build in your intuitive guidance.

2. Quiet the Voice of Ego

When we want to tap into intuition more deeply, it helps to quiet the voice of ego. Ego often speaks through worry, analysis, or the need to figure everything out. Intuition does not arrive through thinking; it simply appears. Creating even a brief moment of stillness can help move you out of mental chatter and into a place where intuition can be heard more clearly.

3. Trust and Validate What Arrives

Intuition often arrives instantly, without explanation. The moment we begin narrating it with our thinking mind, ego can step in and create doubt. Instead, practice accepting the message exactly as it arrives. Whether it comes as a feeling, thought, image, or simple knowing, allow it to be received without overanalyzing it. One of the easiest ways to validate your intuition is by asking a simple question: Does this feel light?

This is where the mantra “If it’s light, it’s right.” becomes a powerful tool. When something feels peaceful, open or light, intuition is often guiding you. When it feels heavy, pressured, or draining, ego or fear may be influencing the response.

Strengthening intuition is not about gaining a special ability. It is about learning to trust the quiet guidance already present within you. The more you notice how intuition arrives and follow what feels light, the easier it becomes to move through life with clarity and confidence. And sometimes the clearest spiritual guidance is also the simplest: If it’s light, it’s right.
