Joy is a kind of courage

by R.J. Andres, Auburndale, NY

in a spider’s hopeful embroideries…

in the feathered wingtips of an egret grabbing onto space…

in the clamor of Canada geese sounding an arrowed hymn…

in the silent owl hunting and a half-moon there to spy with…

in the swan’s soft urging of her poems to swim in a straight line…

in each thieving bee’s eager steaming for pollen somewhere…

in the hang-time of a red-tailed hawk circling to strike…

in fireflies daring to share their light…

in the summer quickening of sunflowers….
