Another Chance at Life
by Hope Fitzgerald
If you live in New England as I do, you've seen frigid temps and an abundance of snow this week, which is clinging heavily to branches as I write. So beautiful!
No matter what the celebration is about (Hanukah, Kwanzaa, etc.), this time of year feels sacred, and I don't think it's only because we've been programmed to respond this way in our so-called "modern" age.
I think it has more to do with ancient programming: the Solstice and our rooted, inherent belief in the notion of rebirth. To have a fresh slate, a new leaf, another chance at life - what could be better than that? Our ancestors certainly thought it was important - just look at the hundreds (if not thousands) of stone structures around the world that point to Solstice as THE most important time of the year.
And to get that chance every year, if we survived that long - wow!
Energetically, this time brings out our "better angels" because we want to improve, having been granted a new beginning. We feel more welcoming, forgiving and generous - any trace of a "Scrooged" heart opens wider as the Sun begins to regain its stature in the sky. Thank you, Sun.
It's an organic, beautiful process as old as the hills: we're deeply responding to a magic that Nature has provided for eons. Here's an example that happened on Christmas Eve day ...
I had one last quick errand to run downtown. As I pulled into a parking spot and went to put coins in the meter, a heavily bearded, older man approached me at the same time.
I guessed he might be homeless due to his disheveled appearance and I anticipated him asking for a donation, but then he surprised me by happily plunking a quarter into my meter before I could reach it!
Amazed, I thanked him profusely, and he said that a lady down the street had just handed him a bunch of quarters, so he was monitoring every meter to make sure that no shoppers got ticketed.
That's what I'm talking about.
He didn't use them for himself, but instead was genuinely excited to play a role in making life better for unsuspecting drivers.
That generosity of spirit moved my heart and has stayed with me ever since, as I believe it is the unstoppable spirit of rebirth, which reliably brings out the best in us.
Let's keep it going by welcoming the increasing light - and a fresh start - together!
